Mary Ellen Baber enrolled to vote in the last stages of her pregnancy. She was part of a politically conscious even feminist social movement. Voting just a few weeks after the birth of her son. How brave she was to have this photo taken.

James Lockington supported his family with encouraging them to be educated and to vote. After his wife died he too followed shortly after, appearing on his death certificate his cause of death was 'from a broken heart'.

Mary Ann Murray was born in the West Indies to a West Indian 18 year old mother and a 26 year old Scottish father.  Starting work at the early age of 15 she travelled to Tauranga Harbour in 1881 as a children's nurse for the Macmillian family.
